Fiction Recommendations
Again, any money that I receive from Amazon.com will go to the Paul Steiger Memorial Scholarship
fund at Marquette University.
- Blue Hole -- G.D. Gearino -
This author is a columnist for the Raleigh News and Observer and also
wrote the excellent What the Deaf Mute Heard
which was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie a couple of years ago. I recommend reading What
the Deaf Mute Heard first if you're interested in reading these.
- Where the Heart Is -- Billie Letts -
Ronda recommends this book. I don't have a review for you but I do know that she enjoyed this book.
- Cryptonomicon -- Neal Stephenson -
In an earlier review, I said that nobody packs more detail into a book than Tom Wolfe. I may have
been wrong. This book deals with, among other things, WWII, cryptography, modern day business
startups, and gold. Also recommended by this author is Snow Crash.
The author also has a website for Cryptonomicon at www.cryptonomicon.com.
- Angle of Repose -- Wallace Stegner -
A great novel about four generations in the American West. Also recommended,
Crossing to Safety, by
the same author. I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of Stegner before; these books are both excellent.
- A Man in Full -- Tom Wolfe -
Nobody packs more detail into a book than Tom Wolfe. It's now in paperback.
- Cold Mountain -- Charles Frazier -
The author lives in Raleigh. A difficult book but I enjoyed it. It takes place during the Civil War and is similar to
"The Odyssey."
