After we left Bibury, we drove to the
small villages of Lower Slaughter and Upper Slaughter. The road
between them was very narrow, causing me to hope with all I had that no
oncoming cars would appear unless it was near one of the wide spots in
the road. Fortune smiled upon us. The two villages are just
a mile or two apart and they have a public
hiking
path between them. There are actually a lot of public
footpaths all over Britain and it seems that hiking is a popular
hobby. The footpaths are public, but they go over private
land. So that's why the sheep appear next to the big stones a
couple pages ago and along our walk between the Slaughters. There
are neat gates set up to keep the sheep from leaving. We walked
from Upper Slaughter down to Lower Slaughter and then to the edge of
Bourton-on-the-Water before turning back. We were sprinkled on
for a short time but fortunately we brought along our raincoats
(ominous foreshadowing here, pay attention when I get to the London
part of our travelogue) and, in fact, we were dry by the time we
returned to our car. It was a great walk.
Ronda and some natives somewhere between Upper
Slaughter and Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds. This is part of
the Warden's Way footpath.
This is one
of the gates. The part on the right side swivels back and forth
but remains within the triangular portion on the left. So you
push the gate forward, walk in, and pull the gate backwards to get
through. It's quite complicated if you are sheep, I suppose.

Lower Slaughter.
Another view of Lower Slaughter.
After our walk we decided to head back to Broadway so that we could eat
and relax a bit. I think we totally missed lunch on this day,
possibly just subsisting off of Skittles and fresh air. High
above Broadway on a tall hill is the
Broadway
Tower (two pages on this link) and we stopped and climbed up it and
got some terrific views from the hill and tower.
Broadway,
Worcestershire from the Broadway Tower. What a view!
This is
what the Broadway Tower actually looks like. There is also a
nearby building where you pay the nominal fee to climb the tower.
Inside this building is a small food area and, as I mentioned, we
hadn't had lunch. So we bought some chips and a Coke (but no Diet
Mountain Dew, sigh). I gambled and bought beef flavored chips or
more accurately I bought beef flavoured crisps. The first one
made you wonder if you should spit it out, the second one made you
wonder if you should just go up and buy another bag...or do I like
these? Maybe another one. Hmm. It's not awful.
I'll have one more. By the end of the bag you like them, but not
that much. A small bag is as far as I'd go with them.
After visiting the Broadway Tower we drove back to our B&B to relax
before going out for dinner. I took a lot of pictures of the town
which will be on the next page.
