What's new?

Wednesday September 15, 1999

Well, it looks like Hurricane Floyd may affect us, time will tell. The latest computer models have it going inland near Wilmington, NC, and then following I-95. That would carry it east of us but we should still see some strong, potentially hurricane force winds. Hopefully most of the trees in the region are able to stay in the ground this time. Floyd is just so darn big and strong that everyone on the coast from practically the Florida Keys to Virginia are moving inland or planning on it. You can follow the storm on ncstormtrack.com.

Yesterday I cleared the patio furniture off of the deck and took the swings off the swingset just in case. We also went to the grocery store to pick up a few things in case we're without power for a lengthy period of time and it was busy there. If you happen to have dozens of crates filled with D-sized batteries you could probably find a few stores here that are out of stock.

Now, to some important things. Let's pretend you're the offensive coordinator for the Vikings and it's third and goal from the 11. Which play do you call:

  1. A pass to Cris Carter, who has over 100 touchdowns.
  2. A pass to Randy Moss.
  3. A pass to Jake Reed or maybe TE Andrew Glover.
  4. A third straight handoff to fullback Leroy Hoard.
Most of us would say 1, 2, or 3, but that's why we're not offensive coordinators. The correct answer is a handoff to the fullback for a gain of three. Personally, I feel you should just kick the field goal on third down if this is the correct play, but again, I'm just an ignorant fan. It's only week one, and the Vikes did hang on for a win, so I'll wait a little while longer before I turn on the coach.

That's all for now. I'll put a storm update on the web in a few days. I expect to be playing cards by candlelight sometime in the next 24 hours at a minimum since we tend to lose power quite often. Take care!
